Serving a local product at the table is a question of taste and philosophy. It is a commitment to quality and to valuing our territory and its people.
Eating local produce has great benefits for us and for our environment. Fresh food that has been produced locally preserves its taste and nutritional properties better when served because it has not travelled long distances. In addition, its ecological footprint on the planet is much lower than that of an imported product, because CO2 emissions and the consumption of fuel to transport it are reduced. Therefore, there are increasingly more people who are committed to filling their shopping basket with local produce and who also expect to find it on the menu of their favourite restaurant.
In Catalonia, we have a great variety of quality products and it would be a shame not to use them. At El Racó, we are convinced of this and therefore, local produce plays a great role in our menu. As we love our region, we are proud to serve Girona apples, with Protected Geographic Indication status, to so many diners.
Our region produces a perfectly coloured sweet apple that is highly attractive and satisfies the palates of those who succumb to the fruit of original sin. It is the result of the work of farmers who love the land and family tradition, and of the excellent climate that comes from the proximity to the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, with mild temperatures and high humidity. The varieties grown in Girona are Golden, Red Delicious, Royal Gala and Granny Smith.
Apples are used in many recipes, from salads through to cakes, including the compotes that are served with some meat dishes. At El Racó, you will find them served naturally, with their vitamins intact and low in calories, so that you can finish off a good meal in a delicious, yet healthy way.
